About Rotorua

Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe
The name Rotorua comes from Maori, the full name being Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe; roto means lake and rua two - Rotorua thus meaning 'Second lake'. Rotorua truly embraces the concept of hosting visitors and proudly represents a wide and varied range of experiences.

Rotorua is the home to 11 major lakes, and Shula’s Lake House is located on the shores of the largest lake in the district, Lake Rotorua. The beautiful lakes, rivers and natural setting provide visitors with a variety of experiences from nature walks to adventure thrills.

Rotorua’s strong tradition of welcoming visitors is based on five pillars (or spirits): geothermal wonders; soothing thermal waters; a strong Maori cultural identity; beautiful lakes, rivers and forested areas; and the large range of adventure experiences.

Thermal activity is at the heart of much of Rotorua's tourist appeal. Geysers and bubbling mud-pools, and hot thermal springs are within easy reach of the city. Nowhere in New Zealand is the earth more powerful - these geothermal attractions will leave you amazed at how unique Papatuanuku (mother earth) truly is.

The geothermal wonders provide Rotorua with soothing thermal waters. Known as Nature Spa of the South Pacific, Rotorua has been a spa town and major tourist resort since the 1800s. Visitors can rejuvenate their spirit as they soak in the natural thermal pools.

Rotorua is the heartland of New Zealand’s Maori history and culture. Encounter the warmth, proud spirit, deep sense of history and quick humour that encompasses Maoridom. Visitors will find all these qualities in their experience with Maori culture. It's the sensation we call Manaakitanga. Come into contact with the descendants of the original Te Arawa tribes who made Rotorua their home five centuries ago.

Shula’s Lake House is located near many popular tourists attractions. We are down the road from The Gondola and Luge, Rainbow Springs, Mitai Maori Cultural Evening, the Agrodome, the Zorb, and Paradise Valley Horse Riding. Bob and Ginie will be happy to assist with information about any local activities.
